January 30, 2006
John R. Ursone, President and CEO of Northwest Community Bank, Winsted, CT, has been elected to the Bankers' Bank Northeast Board of Directors, according to an announcement by Peter J. Sposito, President & CEO.
Ursone has 23 years of banking experience, the last 12 of which have been with Northwest Community Bank, a $277 million bank established by the 1996 merger of Winsted Savings Bank and Northwest Bank for Savings, which had been operating since 1860 and 1875 respectively. He joined Winsted Savings Bank in July 1994 as senior vice president and chief loan officer. He was promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer of Northwest Community bank in 2005.
Northwest Community Bank was one of the 35 investor-banks of the Banker's Bank Northeast, which opened in 1998. Sposito says that Ursone has been a strong advocate for the bankers' bank concept of working with community banks as a partner to meet their correspondent needs.
"As we continue to grow throughout the New England states, we were looking for an experienced, capable director who understands the banking atmosphere in this region," says Sposito. "We turned to John Ursone. With more than 20 years experience as an officer at community savings banks in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut, he has a broad-based understanding of what is needed for community banks to grow and prosper."
Ursone began his banking career at Connecticut Bank and Trust Co. in 1973 and rose to vice president before leaving in 1984. From 1984 to 1986, he developed and managed the Private Banking division of Society for Savings before serving as senior vice president and senior lending officer of Advest Bank from 1986 to 1991.
Ursone has a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida, and is a US Navy veteran. He currently serves as a Trustee of the Beardsley Memorial Library, Director and Treasurer of the Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut (Torrington Area Foundation for Public Giving), Trustee of the Winsted Playground Association and is a former President of the Northwestern Connecticut Community College Foundation.
Ursone resides in Winsted with his wife Sandra. They have two grown children and one grandson.
